“Los Alcatrazes”

Thomas Schlenker learned to carve wood in the colonial furniture workshops of Antigua, Guatemala and was subsequently influenced by the painted, carved wood masks and toys of Mexico.  Through the medium of hand carved bas-relief, Schlenker reshapes and reinterprets pieces of fine art respectfully borrowed from the world’s greatest artists.  His “Los Alcatrazes” (the calla lilies), inspired by Diego Rivera”s paintings of campesinos presenting their flowers at market, won the San Antonio Art League and Museum’s best in show award and now resides in their permanent collection.  Schlenker’s earlier work won the “Clarence E. Blanchard Award for Excellence in Wood Carving” at the Kenosha County Fair.
