Contemporary Botanical Art for Adults, by Artists Sandy Kessel and Kathy Walsh

Class Description:



This class will explore and demonstrate detailed drawings of Botanical specimens.  Focus is on graphite, watercolor and colored pencil, but all media is welcome.

Students are required to have had an intro into drawing class and beginning watercolor skills.




Week 1:  History, examples of botanical art.  Review of how to measure specimens, light and shadows on basic shapes.

Week 2:  Botany of flowers.  Use of magnifying glass and ruler and various flower shapes.

Week 3:  Varieties of leaves and branches.

Week 4:  Composition - Atmospheric perspective.

Week 5:  Fruits and vegetables.

Week 6:  Complicated spiral shapes.  Students will practice each topic and take home their examples.

Supplies Needed** Towel for table covering

  • Sketch book & Tracing paper

  • Watercolor paper of choice (140 lb hot press)

  • Portable table light

  • Paints and brushes

  • Ruler, 6” clear

  • Magnifying Glass

Cancellations & Refunds:

• No refunds will be issued for no shows.

• No refunds will be issued for any dropped students during the class/session.

• Cancellations prior to the first date of class, a $10 cancellation fee will be deducted from the refund.

• Cancellations once class has begun due to personal emergency, prorated funds may be applied to a different class within an identified time-frame as approved by the class instructor.

• Class cancellation due to the Instructor of GLAF, or GLAF, a full refund with no cancellation fee will be issued.

• If a class needs to be made up, due to weather, etc., the instructor may add a make-up day to the schedule.
