CLASS DESCRIPTION:
This 5-week class is designed for those with no or minimal experience working with charcoal as a drawing medium. Explore this unique medium as a drawing tool in a relaxed, supportive atmosphere to learn various methods for creating unique works of art drawing with charcoal. Demonstrations and general drawing lessons will be incorporated into each weekly class. Each student will go home with one or more drawings at the end of each class.
Week 1: Explore varying line thickness and intensity to create focal points in a quick sketch.
Week 2: You will learn how to turn a quick sketch into a charcoal drawing composition, and how to develop a balance between positive and negative space to enhance the drawing.
Week 3: Learn how to create and apply tonal qualities within a drawing to add dimension and depth.
Week 4: We will develop a combination of line variations and tones to enhance the focal points of the drawing within the surrounding spaces.
Week 5: You may choose to re-work or further develop some of your earlier drawings, or decide to begin a new drawing composition. Question & answer session will wrap up this 5-week Charcoal Drawing for Beginners Class.
SUPPLIES NEEDED All class materials and supplies are included.
Each student will receive a supply kit with a set of charcoals, blending stumps, charcoal pencils, kneaded erasers and assorted drawing papers to keep.
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR:

I am a multimedia artist who enjoys Art in all its forms and enjoys teaching and working with people of all ages. I received an Art/Art Education degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Throughout my years as an artist, I have enjoyed my career as an art teacher in the Wisconsin Public Schools system along with my teaching of private and small-group Art classes to children, adults and parent/child workshop classes. My focus as an instructor is to foster the individual creativity of each student as I introduce specific skills they can apply to their Art.
I am a long time resident of Lake Geneva and have been a member of the Geneva Lake Arts Foundation since 2019. I regularly exhibit my art in watercolor, pastel, mixed media and acrylic at Gallery 223 where I have been an art instructor for both children and adults for the past several years. I am looking forward to working with my next group of students!
