Contemporary Botanical Art
Flowers, trees, leaves, plants, fruits and nuts, stalks, weeds, seed pods and roots found in all four seasons inspire and challenge those of us who love botanical art. This specific genre has its roots in history around the globe. It has seen a resurgence of new interest over the past 10 years. Perhaps it is because of our modern awareness of Conservation as we see our world change around us. Today the Contemporary Botanical Artist blends the intersection of the science of Botany with one’s personal expression in art. Our portraits record the beauty we carefully observe in the detail of the plants in our world.
Historically, paintings are usually done in watercolor media which is a challenge to learn to control. However, today’s artists use acrylic, oil, graphite and photography to capture the beauty of Mother Nature. Another area of emphasis is to really study the specimen and observe its detail as well as its overall impression. This exhibition includes the work of artists who come from a variety of backgrounds. Jeanne Dyer a corporate marketing and communications career, Sandy Kessel after a fulfilling career in nursing, Lynne Railsback a commercial interior designer and Kathy Walsh a rewarding career in education. They are now able to pursue their lifelong love of art by participating in the Botanical Art Class at the Geneva Lake Arts Foundation’s Gallery 223 on Friday mornings and exhibiting in a variety of art exhibitions.
WE HOPE YOU ENJOY THEIR WORK

CAPS OFF TO KIDS & ART MENTORS!
In its second year, the Geneva Lake Arts Foundation’s (GLAF) Art Mentoring Program worked with campers ages 10 to 19 during Camp One Step’s Sibling Camp. This week-long camp designed for children whose sibling(s) have cancer is based at Conference Point Center in Williams Bay, WI.
Volunteer GLAF artists spent the day on June 18th providing 97 campers with the materials and help needed to create their own designer baseball caps. The large group of talented youngsters created their own visions of lake scenes, sport themes, flowers, abstracts, and much more. Campers were as enthusiastic as their mentors - “I was here last year and loved it, and my art turned out better this year! “ One camper related. Another said, “What are we going to do next year? How can you top this?”

“Helping at the camp has been very rewarding and fun! It is great to see the wide range of expression through their painting. It is one more avenue to help them cope with their challenging life situations”. Julie Sarton, Art Mentor.
The Geneva Lake Arts Foundation thanks Camp One Step for inviting GLAF and our member artists to provide activities for their campers through its Art Mentoring Program. We also thank our talented artist volunteers: Beth Bergman Falk, and Kathy Kerner, as lead mentors; Dorae Bowen, Diana Garrett, Star Norini, Nikki Marsicano, Lynne Railsback, Pam Ring, Julie Sarton, Eileen Streu and Sandy Wille.
