My work is designed with a sculptural aesthetic and formed with passion for process and materials. I have always been fascinated with patterns in nature, and my glass vessels describe this simplicity and serenity. In my jewelry lines, custom 3D printed findings in strong nylon support cast resin and fused glass, which helps further my description of “non-traditional” adornment. Trained as a sculptor, I utilize standard and experimental mold-making and glass techniques developed in my studio (+40 years of experience), in my graduate sculpture work at the University of Wisconsin at Madison, and as an undergraduate at the School of the Art Institute (SAIC).
A former Director of the Architecture and Design departments and a previous Assistant Director of Academic Advising at SAIC, I also served as the Director of Education at the Evanston Art Center (Illinois). Each piece from Melanie Feerst Studio is one-of-a-kind and handmade in Woodstock, Illinois with encouragement from my rescue dog Nigel, who enjoys running away with the prize when you toss a ball to him . . . the very first time.
